America... I am your Culture..

Maybe Star Wars isn't really related to real life as much as this picture says it is, but believe it or not, Star Wars is all around us. In my Popular Cultures class last week, we discussed just how well related Star Wars is to my "Generation".

It seems that a bunch of bored or lonely geeks all got together and made a really lame movie at first look. However, once you uncover all the secrets, the possibilities are endless. There are literally so many I could never include them all in a post. I digress, because there was one similarity that did catch my eye in class. Luke's father, Darth V., is the leader of the established family business. Darth asks Luke to join him, and he could work under his fathers command and be reunited at last. On the other hand, he is a Jedi from the rugged Rebels. So, Luke could join his father and become the new Darth V guy or he could stop his father from being Darth V and actually work his way into a crowned position. This is why generation x & y and even my generation could relate so well. Do you follow the beaten path or start your own kind of thing.

There are a lot more reasons why star wars is so well related to popular culture, and frankly it's not my ball game to research a lot about star wars, but I saw some of them and I can say maybe you can feel like you and ______ (cast member) can connect, but it's more solidly attached to the history of the world. If you look at the Clone's from star wars movies, they march like German soldiers with out the salute to Hitler. I guess what I'm getting at is Star Wars was really popular and a lot of people loved it. However, it's over and my generation is more concerned about something else. Not if Luke saves the princess or not. So, Star Wars, may the force be with you.

  1. You make several excellent points about how things change and stay the same at the same time.

As you pointed out, the classic good versus evil conflict has never changed throughout history. Luke's path in life mirrors his fathers earlier path through his life. At the point where Vader made his choice in one direction - Luke pulls towards the other direction. While Luke could not follow his father's footsteps, he also could not destroy his father. However, when Luke was threatened by Vader's master - the whole reason for Vader's path - Vader did commit the ultimate sacrifice for his son - he sacrificed himself and in the process allowed Luke to fulfill his own destiny with his own choices and complete the circle that Vader had started many years before. Parents frequently sacrifice themselves or parts of themselves for their children. Nothing really changed and nothing really stayed the same. Luke could not go into the family business as Vader had directed it, but he did go into the business as was originally intended. Luke both forged his own path as well as following the well beaten one that came before him. It is a classic conflict that resonates with all generations.

Depending on which expert or source one uses, you could be a gen y or z or a combination of them both. Gen Z is characterized by the entirety of techno-advances - Star Wars was the most techno-advanced movie of its time. Created in our past, set in a future that still does not exist your generation may not feel the need to save the princess of that creation, but there are and alwasy will be princesses to save - regardless of their hairstyles.

  2. Justin, I like how you did give some information about Star Wars, even though you seem to have not watched any of the movies, or if so very little of them. Even though it is not of your generation, Star Wars was of great importance at the time to many. I do not necessarily care for movies like this, but Star Wars is a great family movie and I would encourage anybody to take the time to watch it.

  3. Justin Justin Justin I do like your connections to star wars and generation x. However I think that you could maybe expand on how these people from gen x connected this to their lifes with what many people made as choices during this generations
